I have spent a few days figuring out how to word this.
I am considered a white woman, because I look white and was raised in the white man's world. BUT, throughout my childhood and into adulthood, I have always had great interest in the NA traditions, culture, beliefs. My grandmother was 1/2 Cherokee. But none of us were taught the ways of our heritage. It was never mentioned, BUT, I gravitated to it. Tried to learn what I could on my own. Which is difficult to do in the white man's world.
I won't get into my personal life here too much, though, I will say this, I was not allowed to practice meditation, burn herbs, listen to NA music, etc because the white man just does not understand, nor do they want to. I was told I could practice, but else where. There is not many places in the city to practice quietly.
There are so many things about the white man's world that I do not believe in or feel comfortable with.
I am a white woman who does not fit in the whiteman's world, or does this white woman fit into the NA world due to skin not being dark enough.

`Welcome to the world of Mixed Bloods! We have a very difficult section of the Red Road that we have to walk, and only a Mixed Blood can walk that path that exists between all the other worlds.
Let your heart be your compass as you travel the path, pray constantly, and be assured there are special blessings for the Mixed Blood NDN's that no one else can receive from the Great Spirit.
Blessings to you Native American sister, and may you find that for which you so fervently seek.

Is there still dissension between full-bloods and mixed-bloods? I know how you feel EveningStar, I too, hate the white man's world. White Europeans are the worst in many ways--too many to list!

`This comment is directed at Woodslore and I am appalled and insulted by your statement: "white Europeans are the worst in many ways - too many to list". What exactly do you base this comment on? I mean, do you know every "white european" there is to know or who has ever lived? I think not! In EVERY culture, race and nationality on this great planet, there is good and bad and some walk in between. Generalizing people is what has caused so many problems between us humans. You, of course, have the right to your opinion, but I ask you to please reconsider your thoughts on this. Dude, we are all in this together and only if we begin to realize that we all belong together, can we even begin to turn things around. For myself, I am thankful that we are different because due to our differences we can learn, grow and expand our horizons. I would HATE to live in a world where everyone was a carbon copy of each other. My heritage is Germanic and in a minute of our documented time, my people had caused grave pain and suffering to countless others, but which nation or people have not? Life is as it is and all we can do is be responsible for ourselves, our actions and how we treat others along the way including our wonderful Mother Earth. Imagine all the people living life in peace - you may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one, I hope someday you will join us and the world will be as one.
Signed,
A white European

I find it slightly ironic that you have posted this on a thread about intolerance. Which particular European countries were you referring to?
To the OP, I am confused by your post. How far have you travelled in search of happiness? You cannot simply rest on your laurels and demand greatness to come to you.
"I was not allowed to practice meditation, burn herbs, listen to NA music, etc because the white man just does not understand, nor do they want to."
You are generalising an entire race of people, which spans entire countries and continents, yet complaining about THEIR lack of understanding?! Really? I cannot abide ignorance and intolerance.

`If I follow what is right for me, usually I don't care what anyone else thinks. If I am trying to force my beliefs on some one else, I often end up judging them, *nalyzing their resistance, when really, all I have is my life and my choices, and all I can do is live that the best I can for me. Which doesn't mean I am perfect, but if I am attempting the correct course for myself, I usually don't care what anyone else says. We're all going to have opinions and make judgments, but I don't have to take them all personally.

`you all need to get a grip........say what you want but it's important to know that we have one world to live in & so much insanity to recover from. it's not the color that blinds us, it's the inhuman way we think. you can talk about dooms day or whatever but i for one am not going to worry about it. i am going to try & make a difference & that is what we should be setting our sites on. hate, ----, envy, prejudice, & antipathy breeds insanity & fear.

I have been a lot of places. Some of the problems we have are because of CULTURE, NOT skin color and the big thing to acknowledge is that CULTURE can CHANGE. I hold onto this hope in the work I do so that I stay SANE. Skin color does not cause people to be cruel or inconsiderate or to speak before they think. It does not cause people to narrow their sight down to only one factor when discussing important things. It does not cause people to scape goat instead of think things through logically and apply fairness and intelligence to their decisions. Skin color never had to do with it. I will write that however, one thing that is CONSISTENT about the color of someone's skin, is that it has often been used as a reason to hate.
I like what this post COULD have bought up, which are the very many issues and things we have to heal in our societies. Attacking a color or race of people expresses a very real anger that is indicative of discontent. The discontent being voiced is a start towards civil and sane discussion and hopefully POSITIVE action to bring about positive changes, but only when the true causes beneath it are (after airing the anger) objectively but considerately addressed.
I have seen much of what has been perpetrated by white colored people. Yes, it is tempting to think that color has to do with it but color does NOT. It is that people are PEOPLE. When I look at individuals I see many within the race that are not on-board with the general actions of those few that are holding positions of fiscal and military power in it. The problem is that people tend to follow, not everyone wants to be a leader nor do they think they have time to instigate change let alone even believe their voice could have power. Those are emotions that all of us, regardless of race or color, have problems with. When something needs changing, it is SO HARD to speak up let alone believe in ourselves.
So let this be a suggestion that the next time this comes up, lets discuss ways to positively change what is.

`Hallo Evening Stars.
My observation is that very few people fit in easily or comfortably, regardless of the cultural circumstance. People have desires and expectations, and for us to be a matching fit is quite a fluke.
The white man’s world is the most difficult, though. To be accepted in the white man's world is a contradiction in terms. White men, with a few exceptions, are unable to accept anybody even slightly different from themselves, because a refusal to agree challenges their fragile sense of identity. Vernon Howard, a white mystic, offers an incisive clue when he says “Fear comes when we try to prove an imaginary self is realâ€Â.
And there are a cultural habits at work in the background. Because the whites submitted to the religion of the Jehovahs, they have accepted a belief system with conformity and intolerance as a central theme.
It sounds like bad news, and in some respects it is truly bad. But with it is also an opportunity that is unique to dwelling in primitive societies - the danger of condemnation gives us an incentive to pay attention, to figure out what is really going on in a society that denies us the comfort of being accepted and supported.
Although it is impossible to make sense of social madness, learning to live amongst it in a way that respects the magic in ourself calls for the very best in us. Heroism, alertness to subtle indicators, clear thinking, seeing behind the deceptive masks - these challenges to our spirit and our abilities cannot be had in a society where genuine niceness prevails.
What is the worst that can happen ? A rude person decides to be rude, and when our reply exposes their phoney values they resent and avoid us. Even though the government wants to break us, to make us docile and obedient, the really murderous times are over - in the USA, anyway.
Today, envy and selfishness has made most people incapable of enjoying and respecting our unique perspective, our daring to create a new understanding. I think that perhaps, like me, you have a yearning for the way it was before the invasion, when the tribe supported our individual struggle to attain wisdom and superb skilfulness.

`My mother is Cherokee/Choctaw and my dad is Egyptian Arabian. It can be hard at times trying to "adjust" so 2 speak but all in all people will always judge a book by it's cover. Not one single person is just made up of one beautiful nationality. Being biracial is a gift and a curse. The curse is having to struggle with identity and placement in society. I am sure everyone in this group can relate to me when I say that being biracial has it's benefits and downfalls. One thing that can be a downfall (expecially if you are half AA) is that you will always be to ethnic for one side and not cultural enough for the other. The benefits are that you get to experience and be a part of two different worlds that don't usually intermingle. Being biracial is also like a secret club, when you meet someone who is biracial you automatically connect because you know that your experiences are similar and most people can't relate. Again being Native American and African Egyptian. I get a lot of people telling me that I look exotic (as if I am a plant) and they "can't quite figure out what my background is".. we fear what we don't understand, and hate what we fear. On my Facebook it says I am of Native American descent and I am passionately IN LOVE with my Native heritage. I take immense pride in my culture and its deep history. Heart of an Indian Strength of an African Pride of a human being Egyptian . Hang in there..blessings too all.
